California-based startup Onewheel developed a monocycle vehicle that behaves like an electric skateboard.

Introducing this new micro-mobility in cities required understanding current city policies and creating a roadmap for which markets to enter first.

Context

Monowheels are currently not regulated by policies in most countries in Europe. In Germany, legislation has not been established yet, so riding small electric monowheels on public roads is not permitted. For our US client, we were looking at business opportunities by analyzing policies in different countries in the European region.

Our Role

With our expertise and research for micro-mobility policy in Germany and other European countries, we looked into the current state of regulatory frameworks, the potential of local roll-outs, and possible obstacles. This research resulted in identifying important stakeholders who can push the movement of legalizing small electric vehicles forward.

Results

Our research work gave Onewheel the tools to clearly communicate the restrictions and requirements their customers could face in European markets, while our strategic advice made it easier for them to lobby for more future-forward legislation and better micro-mobility policies at an European and regional level.
